Christmas Movies

One thing I like about the Christmas Season is the great selection of Christmas Movies. There are so many I never tire of watching from year to year.

Saturday I saw the Bishop's Wife with Loretta Young, followed by White Christmas. On one station I've heard they'll be playing the Christmas Story all day for Christmas.

Who doesn't catch at least some part of It's a Wonderful Life, even if not the entire movie each year? When I was freelancing for the Daily Herald I had the honor to meet and interview the all grown-up Karolyn Grimes, who played the child, Zuzu Bailey, in the film. She's the one who says at the end, "Look, Daddy. Teacher says, every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings." Strange, but I never pictured her as anything but a child in the movie, but children do grow up.

Then there's Natalie Wood who played another child in the Miracle on 34th Street, who also has a great phrase, "I believe, I believe, it's silly but I believe."

What about the Bells of St. Mary's with Bing Crosby? That's another great one.

Do you have a favorite Christmas movie? What makes it special? Maybe it's one I've already mentioned, or another. Please share.

I agree there are SO many good ones. Kind of off-beat, but I really liked Jim Carrey's The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

  2. I like A Christmas Carol - the one with Alastair Sim as Scrooge. Best. Scrooge. Ever. Close second for me is A Christmas Story. Third is The Santa Clause. Last weekend my family and I saw the stage production of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. As a film, it's barely a B-movie, more like an F. But the play embraced the sheer awfulness of the plot/sets/acting in such a funny way, we laughed our butts off.

  3. Yes, the Christmas Carol movie is great. When I was a kid it made me afraid of ghosts in the closet.

  6. I'm not sure it's a favorite so much as a tradition. But my family (both sides, actually) always watches Christmas Vacation. When I was young I had a collection of "taped from TV" movies. I should look those up when I go home this year.

  9. A Christmas Story - I'm one of those people who has the channel that plays it over and over on ALL day. I also love the Aleister Sims Christmas Carol, the George C Scott one, and Scrooge, with albert Finney. I love the part where he goes to hell...that always got me as a little kid!
