Hamming it Up - Do You?

Laurie DeMarino, on the left, and Deb Gross, on the right - Two Chicago-North RWA Chapter members who were attending the Love is Murder Mystery Conference last weekend took time out to ham it up with two obliging reenactors from the Reenactors Fest.

What about you? Have you ever done a spur of the moment, kind of silly, but fun thing? Or, do you have a book character who's a funny, quirky sort? Please share.

  1. LOL! It's all I do! random quirky fun things! And yeah, it makes a great read when you add it with the characters. LOL! It looks like they had a lot of fun!

  2. I love your blog posts, Morgan! I remember standing in the middle of Manhattan with some kind of silly creature - can't remember now, I think a dragon advertising a new restaurant - and getting my picture taken with him. We were just in a silly mood. Had I been home I don't think I would have been that brave!

  3. Everything I do is spur of the moment. My characters are relatively straight, except for the squirrels, they're rather nutty. I live to have fun and get as many smiles as I can. I think my middle name should be quirky.

  4. My Greg McKenzie character is a bit quirky. Sometimes it gets him in trouble. Personally I'm not random quirky, but I've been known to get caught off guard.

  5. I love quirky characters in books. It can be a small thing they do as a character trait or a character that is just a fun-loving goof. I love it.

Love funny quirky spontaneous activities! Characters? Yeah, my Detective Snoop character (new book coming out this year) gets to do stuff I'd do (smile)

  7. Both!
Hey, I'm not "Spunky" for nothing!
And it is a rare, rare moment when someone takes a photo of me NOT smiling big. So adding a level of goofiness to it is not a stretch...

Conferences are a great opportunity to have a little fun. There's a pretty interesting photo of me and illustrator David Geister hamming it up (complete with cocktails) during our MN SCBWI Conference dinner.

I think my random quirkiness left when the twins came along... (kids people-I'm talking kids ;) )

Anyhow, I will live vicariously through my sister who had the privileged of being smooched in a parking garage by an Elvis impersonator. Not a huge feet since they are like a dime a dozen here in Sin City, but I might have to use that in one of my books now that I have remembered it. Thanks Morgan! You rock!

Yes I gave my main character, Josh, my quirky and sarcastic sense of humor. An example although hardly the best would be his experience in the INFERNO. With no hope of escape and the wizard's power taken from him, Josh prepares to face the devil. The wizard says: "You can't stop the devil with a shotgun!" Josh calmly replies: "Who knows, maybe he's afraid of loud noises. "

  15. I'm afraid I had conservative, controlled behavoir pounded into me during the first 17 years of my life and it stuck for a very long time. Now I write about Eva Baum, a spunky young PI who does what she pleases. Her behavior is rubbing off.
