I Missed It - Darn

Sunday night, like every year, I eagerly awaited the Academy Awards. I'd already eaten dinner, made sure the dog was fed and had been let out and in. The DH had graciously vacated the immediate premises in favor of watching another program in the other room. I put on my comfy clothes, and all set, I plopped down on the couch.

Hugh Jackman looked and sounded stunning as the show's emcee. I admired his talents in the opening number, also admired Anne Hathaway's voice. I was touched by the marvelous tributes to the supporting actress nominees and felt happy for Penelope Cruz as she accepted her award.

Then a commercial came on. That's when I made my mistake. I closed my eyes just for a second. Next thing I knew, it was 11:30 and the show was long over. Darn, I missed it!

I can't be the only one who's done something like this. What about you? Have you ever missed a television show you wanted to watch? Or maybe an event you'd planned to attend? Why did you miss it? Did you forget? Fall asleep or oversleep? Did something more pressing come up? Please share.

  1. LOL, Morgan, cardinal rule #5436 strictly says "do not lie on couch without full intentions on sleeping or else you will miss show." Yeah, it's in the What Not to Do When Sitting On Couch Handbook. I broke cardinal rule #5436 so many times, the When You Get Older This is What Things to Look Forward to Handbook comes into play. They gave away so many copies on the Emmys that I thought they'd run out. Didn't you get yours?

  2. Grr.. I wish! I'm one of those who watches something i become completely glued. I can't do anything else. Even if the movie is stupid or horrible or totally boring and everyone else has fallen asleep, I'm the zombie still glued to the thing at 2am! So LOL! I wish! Honestly, to have the ability to miss something every now and then... LOL! And now you know why we don't watch TV at our house! LOL!

  3. Oh yeah. Falling asleep is the biggest culprit for me. I love American Idol and look forward to it every week during the season. If I even so much as THINK I am going to fall asleep, I go ahead and pop a tape in the drive and start recording.

  4. Hmm, I do this also. It's terrible. :)

  5. I'm such a light sleeper, I'd never be able to fall asleep with the TV on.
However, if I do miss something, it's because I didn't write it down. Honestly, I'm to the point I have to write down everything but eating! (And sometimes I forget that too...)

  6. I'm notorious for missing shows I want to watch usually because I fall asleep in the chair shortly after supper almost every evening. Sometimes I do forget about a special program I want to see and other times, I miss stuff because someone else has the channel set to a different program but normally, it's simply because I have nodded off in my big old recliner!

  7. I do this all the time, and I blame my son. If I didn't have to get up every morning at 6 to make certain my teenager doesn't oversleep, I could stay awake in the evenings. All I can say is, thank God for the DVR!

  9. I'm not a tv watcher. I've tried a few times but the shows I like I've already seen. I've fallen asleep waiting for an IM converstation and missed though.

I got "busy" on my darn computer! The show was on, but I was only half-paying attention to it. Gotta join "Bloggers Anonymous!"

  12. Ha Ha Morgan you caught me on this one!

My mother and I ate our dinner, cleaned the kitchen, went to the tv room and set up our snack table so we didn't have to go into the kitchen and miss a moment of the awards.

Well, lo and behold if a commercial we both hate came on and my mother instead of muting it changed the channel and we got interested in an English movie.

By the time we came back to the awards the whole darn thing was over! So needless to say we had to wait until the news came on to see who had won. Which is never like watching the actual show by any means.

  13. Nothing can put me to sleep faster than TV - even when I like the show! I've seen way more beginnings than endings.

  14. I don't fall asleep and miss stuff, but I get so annoyed with commercials I do the change the channel thing and forget to switch back.

Unless it's House or 24. I eagerly watch the new episodes and during the commercials attack my manuscript with the red pen. It's fun to see how many pages I can get through before the commercials are over.

  15. Ha! Even worse, sitting down, nodding out and waking to wonder what day it is? Missed the whole show and whole night!

  16. The presentation was great, Hugh Jackman sang and danced and did a good job of it, disappointed in movies that won, too depressing, and turned it off when Sean Penn made a political speech.

But, I fall asleep during commercials a lot, if it's something I really want to see, I tape it.

  17. ROTFL!
No, I have NEVER fallen asleep while waiting for a show to come back on. But I know lots of people who do.
    Sorry you missed it. :-)

  18. LOL That is so funny!

I missed it because I spent the whole night overseas... I always have to see the results the next day from CNN. Very annoying!

    Mary--

If you still want to see the Oscars, I have it on video tape. Yes, I mean on tape. Amazingly, since I watch/tape about one show a year now and it's always the Oscars, I can't believe I didn't flub it up.

If you still have a VCR (one of those obsolete machines that plays video tape cassettes), and you wish to see the show, email me with your snail mail addy and I'll send it off to you.

My email address is at the bottom of my blog. Click my name!
