Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, IL

All over the news in our area is a horrific true story about unfeeling employees who actually dug up the remains of people buried at Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois, dismembered them and hid them elsewhere. The bodies of some of these loved ones may likely never be recovered. This secretive scheme was done so the plots could be sold to others.

My heart goes out to the families of these loved ones. For more about this travesty, here's the link to the story in the Chicago Tribune. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-090529-burr-oak-cemetery-pictures,0,2332072.photogallery

If it doesn't come up for you, just go to www.chicago.tribune.com.

This is the sort of thing you might read about in a horror story, but to think it actually happened in real life is dumbfounding. I wonder what makes people do such things. Is money that important?

  1. I've got a friend who lives in Chicago and he is just disgusted with this horrible crime! (And rather disgusted with the entire state - says California is no longer the perverted state.)

  2. Sometimes, I think there is just no end to how far some people will go and what they will do. I read about this in our little local newspaper and it just seems totally incredible that they were able to do this in the first place with no one noticing anything odd was taking place there. That does have to be the ultimate act of non-caring for one's fellow man when they have to stoop so low as to desecrate a cemetery in that manner. Just totally disgusting.

  3. Egads - gawd, it's one thing to read about horror in a book. It's quite another to realize it in real life.

I know this question is not politically correct, but why didn't these families notice the missing graves when they visited their loved ones?
Answer-they haven't visited in years, but they are now all into drama with the TV cameras.

  6. Even when you're not into visiting the cemetery, you like thinking that your relatives' remains are treated with respect.

  7. Morgan, sadly this doesn't surprise me at all. Who remembers back a few years that mortuary who wasn't actually burying the bodies at all? The pursuit of money seems to be a most insidious evil. How can it be surprising that some little fish are trying to fill their pockets, when we see the Bernie Madoffs of the world making billions? Very sad state of affairs. And the NY Times story on this described the families wandering through the cemetary looking for the plots of their loved ones - and the image they described that stuck with me was not the groups of family members, but the solitary elderly widows and widowers looking for their spouses' graves. I don't suspect that the punishment will fit the crime, but one can always hope!

And yeah, truth is so often stranger than fiction.

  8. The thought of the elderly widows and widowers looking for the graves of their loved ones is very sad, especially since they probably can't get to the cemetery very often and have to rely on someone else to take them. This is very disturbing to even think about, not to mention to go through.
