Waiting to Eat

First, a Commercial ----- Another Blog Talk Radio Show this Sunday, March 15, 4pm Central Daylight Savings Time - My Guest is Barry Eva, author of Across the Pond - Call in #347-308-8605 - For More Info, Check Out: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/booksandblogs

Friday night we went to a fish fry. It wasn't very well organized. The DH and I sat and waited for about half an hour to get served. He hates to wait to get fed. I'm a little more patient, but only for so long.

When we did get our helping, it was one piece of fish, a small dish of cole slaw and some hard fries. Two of the people at our table had to wait at least half an hour longer to get their food.

Ours came a bit earlier because I got impatient and asked one of the servers, who was a very young girl like most of them working there were, when we'd get fed.

It was supposed to be all you can eat, but the trick of that was people's patience wore so thin, I don't believe many of them asked for too much more. Someone did come around with a plate of seconds and I had one and the DH had two more pieces, but it took a long time for that to happen.

So, we've decided not to go back there next week. I have a feeling the event was the victim of its own success. I don't believe the people holding it expected such a response. I won't name the organization or place because I do feel sorry for them because they were so unprepared.

What about you? Have you ever been to a function that was poorly run? What about when you go to a restaurant, will you wait twenty minutes, thirty or even more to get fed? Please share.

  1. Unfortunately, yes, I've been to many a function that was run poorly, mostly due to a lack of planning & preparation.

And at restaurants, my husband will wait about ten minutes maximum to be seated. As he says, we are paying THEM, and he does not believe in paying to wait.

Yep been there - bad organization at events sucks. And I wait 15 mins max at a restaurant - then I'm outa there. Exception would be if I'm on my laptop on wifi and preoccupied while waiting and time flies by - lol.

  3. I've been to a few badly organized events. But my better half is a cook at a restaurant and on friday's it's all you can eat fish and they do get swamped. It takes good organization in the kitchen to make it run smooth and some of the cooks there are not even close to organized. The other half is the assistant kitchen manager although she should be the manager.

That is thanks to an owner that doesn't believe a woman can handle it, yet she does all the management for the catering and most of the kitchen managing as it is.

We see a lot of fish frys here in Minnesota, but I'm not the biggest fan of them. My husband doesn't care for fried food, and I was a little peeved at how overpriced and awful the all-you-can-eat food was. It was so bad, you didn't want seconds.

  6. LOLOL! I live in Europe! hahaha! this post had me smiling... I've forgotten what it's like to live in a country where you can leave the restaurant at a decent hour! in portugal you usually never saw your menu until after an hour. Most dinner dates my hubby and I had, we learned real quick to get a group together, because it made the 3/4 hours go by so much quicker. Yumm... I sure do miss that food though! Sigh.. even in england you're looking at a good 1 1/2 hours of solid restaurant time. I think they just go slower and enjoy the moment. It's frustrating at first, but nice once you adapt! LOL! And have a great group of friends to laugh with! Jenni

  7. Just last night, my husband and I were walking around downtown Lake Worth and saw a bar/restaurant that had a line of people waiting to be seated. H asked how long the wait was and was told 20 mins and was given a beeper. Then we made our way inside, found seats at the bar and ordered a drink. We didn't get seated for probably an hour, but we had a good time meeting people at the bar. We met an interesting local who'd lived in FL so long you could hardly tell he was originally from NY (ha!) and he had fun making sense of Husband's Texas accent.

  8. I will tell you the truth, I am awful at restaurants. And not the kind of awful that's embarrassing, but the kind of awful in that I was raised to believe that when you are paying for a service, you should be treated with respect and kindness. You should also be served promptly and attentively. The serving youth of today could care less about manners and etiquette, so I tend to lose my patience quite a bit when we eat out. I would not have waited well for something like that. You're a more patient woman than I, Morgan!

There is nothing more frustrating than a poorly run event. I leave in the first ten minutes at a restaurant if it looks like things are going badly, but if it is the only place open and I am starving, then I am stuck. I have left my seat to go get my own table setting, water, coffee, which usually makes someone take care of the table I am at. When I am starving, I have no patience.

  10. Waiting time. Hmmm. The restaurants around where I live in California are pretty much on time. If you have to wait longer than a half hour and you are still waiting, then the manager compensates in some way, at least that what my son has experienced.
I really haven't had a long waiting time in any restaurant.
