One thing led to another when I blogged Put A Girl in It at Make Mine Mystery about including romance in mysteries.
From that, a lively discussion started on pumpupyourblog listserv about whether or not Reba sang in Put A Girl In It with Brooks & Dunn. So, as proof I dug up a link from Youtube where she did sing with them at an awards show. If you click Put A Girl In It above, and go to the second song, there she is!
Anyway, one thing led to another and we started sharing country music likes and dislikes. I've taken the discussion public here, so everyone can share.
Anyone who's read my blogs before knows I'm obsessed with country music. At home I wake up and go to sleep to US 99.5 FM, America's Country Station. On vacation, it's WJJQ from Tomahawk, Wisconsin. In fact the Tomahawk station is what really got me hooked on country. One summer the hit was Passionate Kisses and the DH and I would laugh everytime it came on and we sang loudly along. Way before that, I enjoyed Glen Campbell and some of the other country singers, but wasn't quite as much into the country scene.
GAC is a great TV station for background music when I write, despite the fact I sometimes have to leap up to watch a favorite video.
Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw (when he's not singing depressing songs), Toby Keith, Trace Adkins, and so many more are my favorites.
What about you? Do you like country? If so, what got you started? Do you have favorites? Please share.
Towards the end of my professional musician gigging career I played in a C & W band. Great fun. The leader of the band, the drummer, when asked by anyone in the club what all kinds of music we played, would always say, "We play BOTH kinds of music. Country AND Western!" LOL
ReplyDeleteI love all genres of music, but have a special liking for country. To me it's like the white man's blues. I like lots of the same artists you do. And if Faith Hill and I weren't both married I'd look her up and hit on her. (smile)
Morgan, I love country music. Like you, I was a fan of Glen Campbell way back when. Passionate Kisses was also a fav of mine when it was popular.
ReplyDeleteI just went to a funeral for a cowboy and the whole service had that strong western, cowboy, country music theme. What an experience. There is something so soul-catching about country. "The Dance" was one of the songs played and I thought it was so appropriate.
I am totally a country girl! My sister and I used to dance to "Rhinestone Cowboy" in the middle of the living room when we were little girls. Just this week I got my Kenny Chesney tickets for his summer concert at Soldier Field. I also love Toby, Carrie, and Brad! I often use tidbits of country songs in my writing...the music helps inspire me. I actually wrote an entire short story based on my favorite Toby Keith Christmas song! It's now a free read at The Wild Rose Press.
ReplyDeleteI avoided country music for a long time (my mom used to drive me crazy by listening to it when I was a teen who wanted to hear rock 'n roll!), but I still had a soft spot for a few country artists even then. However, Garth Brooks totally won me over about 15 years ago and, since then, I've been an avid fan. Kenny, Keith, Brad, Faith and Tim, Sugarland and Rascal Flatts are some of my faves :).
ReplyDeleteLove country music. As a matter of fact, it was country music week on American Idol last week. It was really neat to see how these contestants who hated country music came up with their own rendition of a country song. Adam? LOL, he's good but man that was scary!
ReplyDeleteLOVE country music.
ReplyDeleteGrew up in a family of country music haters so I don't know if I started listening to it to rebel or if I actually liked it. Either way, I still like it today.
Favorites? I have to pick favorites?
I lived in Texas long enough to grow to like country music but I'm an oldies person at heart.

I'm not a big country fan but I do like Brooks and Dunn (love their version of My Maria! great voices!), I do like Rascal Flatts and Carrie Underwood, probably the only country persons I liked enough to a buy a cd! Oh and Faith Hill too.
ReplyDeleteI like country, especially Charlie daniels. There are many more artists in that genre that I like also. But I also love big band, jazz, old rock, folk, blues, classical. Ok, I love all music except rap. I write to an eclectic collection that goes from Back to Nickleback
ReplyDeleteMe, I like bluegrass and country music.
ReplyDeleteI'm a recent convert to Country music. It's not big in New Zealand, but when hubby and I traveled to the US last year we could only find Country music on the radio. Neither of us were fans, but we were forced to listen and started liking it. Thank goodness for iTunes is all I can say. :)
ReplyDeleteI like all the ones that have been mentioned and would like to add Taylor Swift and Josh Turner.
I may not have been country when it wasn't cool, but I liked it before I knew it was country that I liked. To explain: a lot of artists that I liked when I was a kid turned out to be country artists, which I found out when I was older and living in Nashville. We just finished 24 years there, and while our musical tastes are eclectic, country is at the top. Nashville being different than LA or NYC, we actually got to meet musicians in our regular lives; they are way more accessible than many of their entertainment industry counterparts. Plus you can't throw a stone in Nashville without hitting either a sessions musician or a songwriter.
ReplyDeleteIn one book I'm working on, one character is a songwriter -- which forces me to develop another whole skill set!
ooh! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Country! I can't wait to head home to the good ol' USofA and hear it on the radio as I'm driving down the street again. Sigh. 8 years has been too long! Jenni
ReplyDeleteI love country music also - the "pop" country - I especially love those that you named - Trace Adkins, Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood, etc. Country music has come a long way, I think and really seems to appeal to a wide range of audiences. It always amazes me when the rockers or popsters turn to country. It's great and just goes to show how diverse country music really is, I think!
ReplyDeleteNot a country fan at all, but there are some songs that I enjoy.
ReplyDeleteThis might surprise you, but I'm a big KISS fan. When they did their comback tour in 1996, the hubby (at that time boyfriend) and I went to see them 4 times in a year. I guess you could say that "I want to rock n roll all night..." LOL!
Cheryl
Have always listened to country music since I was a kid. My hubby teases me that I'm a little bit country and he's a little bit rock "n" roll.
