Does Your Dog Tell You to Go To Bed?

If I'm up too late typing on my computer, Rascal starts whining and nudging my elbow. She's telling me it's time to go to bed. She won't go to bed until I do. She follows me to the hallway, then sits there and watches me climb the stairs up to the bedroom. She's not allowed to go up there herself, but she has her own little space complete with comforters, in back of the easy chair in what we call our TV room. If

Right now she's pestering me to go upstairs. What about your dog? What does it tell you to do? Or maybe you have a cat or other pet. Please share.

My cat tells me what to do and WHEN to do it! :)

  2. My dogs think it's their job to keep an eye on me....tell me when it's time to eat, time to sleep and the best of all...NAP time!

  3. Yep! Omar (girl black lab) lays at the bottom of the stairs and whines at 9 every night *just in case* we've forgotten it's time to go to bed...and more importantly, that it's fill the food bowl with kibble!

Oh yeah. My dog seems to find the bedtime routine comforting. We're his "pack" and he doesn't like to lay down for the night unless we are in bed as well.

  5. In my case it's the cats. They start getting restless if they aren't tended too. They also want hubby and me upstairs so they reek havoc on the downstairs without being chastised.

  6. ha! We have a gate between kitchen and living room (to keep her away from jumping on aviary screen) and once she's gone out for the night, she figures, that's it. So, she will push gate open, walk into bedroom and lay on bed whether you're ready or not!

  7. SpookyTooth, the Wonder Cat is in charge of our studio apartment. He's a 18 pound, black, Maine Coon, and they are known for their conversational skills, chirping, yowling, a tremendous range of vocal noises that they string into sentences and paragraphs of cat talk. He tells us when his ears are cold, when he needs for me to make up the bed so that he can take his nap...and dozens of other things. He even has opinions about living with writers. http://www.beaufortfalls.com/page8.html .

My dogs Harry and Nick are incredibly smart. A couple of days ago I made a sandwich and was headed to the table with it on a plate. Know what happened? They caught it BEFORE I dropped it! Are they smart or what?! - Snooks

  9. I don't have a pet, but my daughter's lab just looks at you with those big brown eyes until you pay attention to what she wants, and if that doesn't work, then we get a little whine that goes with it! If all else fails, there will be a head nudging under your arm to try to get you moving.

  10. That's Max. He'll sit there and rub a hole in your leg with his paw to get you to throw the ball. Skylar, the Sheltie, will bark really loud when it's time to eat. I love these doggies but they sure do know how to communicate!

  11. I lost my best friend Pepper, a Lhasa Apso in 2005. She found us and stayed for 12 years. When she had been up long enough she would paw at my calf. I would go to the front door to see if she had to go to the bathroom, she didn't budge. She would walk down the hallway to my room then come back down the hallway to where I was and get behind me and nudge my calf again. I miss her with all my heart. Best dog I ever had...

  13. Mine tells me so clearly! He simply goes to his own bed and sleeps.

  14. You have a dog named Rascal. We have an Orange tabby with that name. He will tell us it's bedtime, then lays down beside whomever is there first.

He also makes sure I fill his bowl with food and put cold water in his water dish. He eats breakfast at the same time I do.

I'm not much of a dog person, although I like them. But cats are so funny. I feel there should be books, music and pets in every home.

  15. Yep...My cat, Timbre, does it every night. If I ignore him, he gives me a soft nip. Then, he goes to my significant other and starts on him as well. As soon as one of us heads toward the bedroom, he beats us in there at a dead run. He's usually sitting on the end of the bed looking as though he'd like to say, "What took you so long?" LOL

  16. Psycho Kitty is quite insistent about bed time. She will jump on the desk, walk across the keyboard, sit on the mouse or my hand, head butt me or the computer screen, or attack the cursor as it moves across the screen. If none of those tactics work, she'll sit at the bottom of the stairs and meow her head off until someone goes upstairs and lies down. She likes to snuggle - for a few seconds. If you try to pet her one too many times, she'll try to take your arm off. She's such a sweet cat. Did I mention that she's Mark's?
